Ceramic leather protection — FEYNLAB Leather Coating

Denim stains, sweat and UV degradation of leather seats. Ceramic coating for pigmented leather at a certified FEYNLAB studio in Ústí nad Labem.

The seat by the door has darkened to blue, and a damp cloth only smeared the stain. Sweat maps on the bolster keep their shape once dry, and the spot where a sleeve or a belt rubs the leather every day is lighter and duller than the rest. A cotton cover would hide it, but a cover is not why you bought a leather interior.

What is happening

Leather in a modern car is not bare hide. It is a pigment layer protected by a thin polyurethane lacquer, and everything you see on the seat is happening on that lacquer. Indigo from denim does not sit on the surface like dust: friction and body heat press it into the lacquer. A fresh stain will still come out within twenty-four hours with a neutral cleaner; an older one calls for a solvent.

Sunlight gradually embrittles the polyurethane lacquer until micro-cracks appear in it. And oil conditioners, sold for years as "feeding" for leather, tend to speed that up: on modern lacquer they stay as a greasy film that picks up dust and abrades the surface with every sitting.

What we will do about it

FEYNLAB® Leather Coating is a ceramic coating for leather: it lays a thin layer onto the lacquer that bonds chemically to the polyurethane through a silane. What forms is a layer that wears instead of the lacquer beneath it — and that is its purpose.

The surface becomes hydrophobic, so water, sweat and spilled coffee run off it instead of soaking in. Against indigo the coating does not form a hundred-percent barrier, but it changes the mechanics of the transfer: to indigo it is non-porous and without the moisture that would draw it inside, so a fresh mark stays on top and wiping it off is trivial. Its third function is a UV screen, which delays the embrittlement of the lacquer.

The coating belongs on pigmented, that is lacquered leather — in roughly nine out of ten modern cars that is the factory finish. Application is multi-stage and belongs in the studio. The manufacturer states a service life of two to three years, with a refresh once a year. You will get the price for your car in the proposed solution.

Where its limits are

Aniline leather has no polyurethane lacquer, and a coating would seal the natural surface it is used for. On semi-aniline the lacquer is only 25 micrometres thin, and there we decide after an inspection. Alcantara and synthetic upholstery do not belong here at all. The coating goes only onto a clean surface. Fresh transfer from denim and a neglected interior are therefore handled by cleaning first — depending on condition by detailed, deep, or extreme interior cleaning.
