Film on the paint
The Film That Repairs Fine Scratches By Itself
3 minEstimated reading time — roughly how many minutes it takes to read at a normal screen pace.
A car looks flawless right after a wash. Then the sun catches the bonnet from the side, and a web of fine rings and lines shows up in the reflection — from the wash mitt, from the drying towel, from the brushes in a car wash. Where they come from is covered in Swirl marks in the paint after a wash. This one is about something else. Plenty of people have heard that such marks can heal themselves in a ceramic coating. Few know a protective film does the same thing.

It's not an add-on, it's a property of the material
Every clear FlexiShield film we install on cars has a self-healing top coat. You don't choose it, you don't pay extra for it, and you don't need to ask about it. The base, the stronger, and the strongest line all have it the same way. They differ in thickness and warranty length, not in whether a small mark evens itself out.
How it works: with heat, not polishing
The film is made of TPU, thermoplastic polyurethane. A fine scratch in it isn't material that's gone — it's material that's been displaced. The layer holds its shape and returns to it with heat. Sunshine, lukewarm water from a hose, or gentle warming is enough. You don't polish anything, you don't sand anything, you just wait. That's why a mark from washing doesn't disappear by being removed, but by the surface straightening itself out.
We can't put a single number on how long that takes: it depends on the heat and the depth of the mark. In summer, on a sun-warmed bonnet, it's a matter of moments; in winter, on cold metal, nothing happens until you warm the surface. You don't need to park the car anywhere special for it.
The limit this whole article rests on
Self-healing happens in the film, not in the paint underneath it. The film seals the paint exactly in the condition it finds it, flaws included. Swirl marks the paint already has today will stay visible under the film for as long as the film is there. For those there's paint correction, and we propose it upfront as a separate step with its own price.
What self-healing fixes and what it doesn't
It straightens out wash marks and light hairline scratches — exactly what everyday driving and care produce. A key scratch, a puncture, or a deeper scratch it will not fix. There, material is missing, and there's nothing to straighten out. Damage like that gets handled by replacing the film section, not by waiting for the sun.
Ceramic coating or film?
Both can self-heal, but each solves a different problem. Ceramic surface protection is a chemical layer: it changes how the surface handles water and dirt. Film is a physical layer, a piece of material sitting between the stone chip and the paint. If what bothers you is mainly swirl marks from washing, ceramic is the cheaper route. If it's gravel flying off the motorway, ceramic isn't enough and you need film. Film handles swirl marks too, but you buy it for the impacts.
What happens at our shop and what to expect
The film is heated during installation so it can follow the shape of the panel. In our shop it's installed by Lukáš Vyskočil and Sebastian Vyskočil — we're a certified studio and FlexiShield installer. We can't give a single number for the article: the price is calculated from the coverage, the panels, and the line you choose, so there's a big difference between the front end alone and the whole car. You'll find the coverage options and prices on the PPF film page, where you can compare them before writing to us. The material carries the manufacturer's warranty according to the line you choose — eight to twelve years for the clear films. On the workmanship we give two years, and we run warranty checks.
