FlexiShield BHP MAT — matte PPF film

FlexiShield BHP MAT turns gloss into satin and protects the paint like clear PPF. Seven-year warranty on the material, two years on the work.

Glossy paint in the afternoon sun shows up every smear and every trace of wax. A matte finish fixes that, but a matte respray is a one-way trip: it can't be undone, and it gets written into the car's papers.

FlexiShield BHP MAT is the matte finish of FlexiShield film – the same family as the gloss films, just with a matte top surface. It goes over glossy paint, the paint underneath stays glossy and unchanged, and the matte look comes from the top of the film itself. We fit FlexiShield film as a certified installer; the certification is issued by a manufacturer abroad.

How it differs from the films next to it

The three clear FlexiShield films differ mainly in thickness and warranty length: BHP is 191 µm with an 8-year warranty, WSH is 203 µm with 10 years, and WSH Pro is 216 µm with 12 years. BHP MAT comes from the BHP line, but the rule changes for the matte finish – thickness isn't the figure that matters here, the surface is – and the warranty on the material is 7 years.

Against a coloured film, the difference is in what actually changes: coloured PPF film changes the colour of the paint and protects it along the way, the same as clear PPF. BHP MAT doesn't change colour – it changes whether the paint reflects light or scatters it. Against a decorative colour wrap, which is mainly about looks, BHP MAT is still FlexiShield film underneath: it protects the paint like clear PPF does.

Where it has limits

Film doesn't fix the paint. Whatever is on the paint on installation day – scratches, faded colour – stays under the film exactly as it was. The film also isn't completely invisible: it has thickness, and up close, the edge of a panel shows where it ends.

A matte surface also loses something the gloss lines have: a self-healing top coat that smooths out light swirl marks from washing with heat. Only the glossy films carry that. Polish, wax or a brush wash will buff a matte surface back to gloss, and that can't be reversed – the fix at that point is a new film on that panel, not a touch-up of the one that's there. The matte finish is also only applied to the body; headlights and glossy trim stay in clear film.

When to choose a different route

If you want the self-healing gloss top coat and the longest warranty, FlexiShield WSH Pro or WSH is the right line; FlexiShield BHP covers the base of the family. An overview of all four films is in Which PPF films we install.

If you want colour rather than a matte finish, that's coloured PPF film. If your car already has matte paint from the factory and the job is to keep it, not create it, that's the opposite problem – it's covered in Matte paint: how to protect it. If you only need film on one hard-worn spot rather than the whole body, that's film for a single panel. We give a two-year warranty on the installation work itself, whichever line you choose.
