The Coating That Heals Wash Marks By Itself

On dark paint a web of fine swirl marks shows after every wash. A self-healing coating straightens them with heat — but only the ones that form in it. Where that limit is and who it pays off for.

A dark car looks flawless for a moment after a wash. Then the sun catches it from the side and a web of fine swirl marks appears in the reflection — from the wash mitt, from the drying towel, from the brushes in an automatic wash. Where they come from and what makes them worse is covered in Swirl marks in the paint after a wash. This one is about something else: there is a layer in which such marks straighten out by themselves.

What self-healing actually does

An ordinary ceramic coating puts a hard layer on the paint. Swirl marks from washing then form in that layer instead of in the paint — which is good, because the paint underneath stays untouched. But in the layer they stay visible.

A self-healing coating is softer and behaves differently. A fine scratch in it is not material removed but material displaced: the layer has an elastic structure that returns to its original shape with heat. Sunshine or warm water is enough. The mark does not disappear because it was polished out, but because the layer straightened itself.

The limit nobody talks about much

Self-healing happens in the layer, not in the paint below it. Swirl marks the paint already carries today will not be straightened by any layer — they stay visible under it for as long as the layer is there. For those there is paint correction, and we propose it beforehand as a separate step.

The second limit is in what self-healing can manage. It straightens wash marks and light hairline scratches. A key scrape, a stone chip or a deeper scratch it will not repair — there the material is gone and there is nothing to straighten.

The two lines that can do it

SEVEN Works is a certified studio and FEYNLAB installer, so both are available here.

Heal Lite is the lighter of the two. The manufacturer quotes roughly 60 % of the self-healing capability of the higher line and a service life of up to five years, and recommends it mainly for dark paint. On lighter paint, or on a car you wash less often, it is usually enough.

Self Heal Plus is FEYNLAB's top line and the manufacturer offers it only to its partners. It is a multi-layer system with full self-healing capability; each layer has to cure before the next one goes on, so it also takes more work to apply.

The difference between them is not whether swirl marks straighten out, but how many of them and how fast.

When self-healing is not worth it

It makes no sense on a car you wash rarely and park in a garage — there the marks do not build up enough to pay for it. It makes no sense on light paint either, where a single swirl is almost invisible. And it makes no sense where the main worry is a stone from the motorway: against flying gravel a coating is chemical protection, not a barrier, and for that there is PPF film. You do not lose self-healing by going that way — the film's top coat straightens itself with heat in just the same way, and every line has it.

It is worth it in exactly one case, which is a common one: a dark car that gets washed often.

What we do and what it costs

You will find both lines in the price list on the ceramic surface protection page, where all the lines stand side by side with prices — Heal Lite and Self Heal Plus are the two self-healing ones in that list. The price is for a car of ordinary size; paint correction, if the car needs it, is charged separately according to its actual condition.
