The Car Is Dirty Again a Few Days After a Wash

The car leaves the wash clean and three days later it looks grey again. One drive in the rain, dust off the fields and a scatter of insects along the edge of the bonnet is enough. Because it keeps repeating, you wash more often — and every pass of a sponge over dried-on dirt leaves a fine scratch in the paint. After a few seasons of that cycle, a dark car under hard light shows a web of swirls that traffic didn't put there. Washing did.

Why dirt holds on so tightly

Up close, the glossy top layer of paint is not a smooth sheet. It has a microscopic texture, fine pores and hollows, and road dirt settles into them. Brake dust, minerals from water left to dry, insect residue — all of it has somewhere to lodge. When a droplet dries on a surface like that, the dirt in it stays down in the hollow and a jet of water won't flush it out. You have to reach it physically, with your hand and a sponge. And that mechanical contact is what abrades the paint.

What a thick layer changes

FEYNLAB Ceramic V3 is a ceramic coating with a high solids content. In practice that means what cures on the paint isn't a thin film but a layer that fills and levels out that microscopic texture. From the dirt's point of view the surface becomes far simpler: there are far fewer places to grip. The manufacturer describes this as a self-cleaning property and lists V3 as three-year protection. We apply it as part of ceramic surface protection.

On the car you notice it mainly at the wash. Water pulls into beads on the layer and runs off, taking with it whatever it can carry. A touchless pre-wash and foam do a bigger share of the work than on bare paint, because the dirt isn't bitten into the pores. The sponge then simply passes over the panel instead of being pressed into it. The wash is shorter, and above all you touch the paint less — which breaks the cycle where every wash adds a few more scratches.

What the layer can't do

It doesn't replace washing. Dirt lands on V3 just as it lands on bare paint; it only holds on worse. A car you don't wash will be dirty either way. The difference is how much work it takes to get it clean.

It won't remove the swirls the paint has today. The layer seals them in underneath. If they bother you, paint correction belongs before the coating, as a separate step.

It doesn't stop mechanical damage. A hard layer won't absorb a stone off the motorway — that's what PPF film is for. And bird droppings left to dry and sit on the car for a week will mark a ceramic coating too; the difference is that you can usually rinse them off with water before they reach the paint.

V3 does not belong on matte or satin paint at all: it would turn it semi-gloss. The manufacturer has a separate line for those surfaces.

Who it isn't worth it for

A car that lives in a garage, covers few kilometres and gets washed after every trip. There the dirt never has time to build up and you won't feel the difference at the wash.

And a car that goes through an automatic wash with brushes. Brushes create swirls regardless of what lies beneath them. The layer is harder than paint, but it is not indifferent to a rotating brush, so the smooth surface you paid for is spoiled straight away. If you want washing to leave as little trace on the paint as possible, the way the car is washed is part of the protection — we'll show you how at handover, or bring the car to us for a hand wash.

Before you ask about the price

How much work is needed before V3 can go on at all is read off the paint, not out of a price list. What the preparation covers, and why two cars of the same size part ways, is set out in What you pay for with ceramic protection.

Send us the make, model and paint colour, how much you drive and whether the car is parked outside. A few photos of the paint in daylight tell us more than a description.
