The Paint Is Clean but Has No Depth

You wash the car regularly and it is clean, yet the colour has no depth. Sunlight off the bonnet does not come back as a sharp image; it spreads into a pale haze. And when you run your palm over the dry paint, the surface drags slightly: it does not glide under your hand, it holds it.

Those are two observations, not one, and each is telling you something different. Before we offer you any coating, we want to know which of them applies to your car.

What your palm notices before your eye does

Put your hand in a thin plastic bag and move it slowly across a clean, dry bonnet. The bag amplifies what your fingers alone cannot feel. Grit and drag underneath it mean there are particles sitting on the paint that washing does not remove: brake dust and iron from traffic, tar, tree sap, industrial fallout. It builds up over years and keeps adding.

Those particles do two things at once. They leave the surface rough, which is what you feel. And they break up the surface of the paint, so light off the bonnet no longer returns in one direction but scatters.

What washing takes off and what it does not

Iron, tar and fallout come off with a decontamination wash, first chemically and then mechanically. After it, most of the drag is usually gone and the paint glides under your palm.

What remains is the shape of the paint underneath: fine swirl marks from washing and traces of earlier polishing. Those will not wash off, because they are not dirt — they are the surface itself. Levelling them is the job of a paint correction, and why paint lights up afterwards is explained in why paint glows after a correction. For your case only one thing follows from it: ceramic does not level paint. It seals in whatever goes under it.

The line aimed at gloss and slickness

A coating only has something to bring out once the paint is clean and level. FEYNLAB Ceramic by Paul Dalton was created in collaboration with detailer Paul Dalton, and the manufacturer aimed it at gloss: at depth of reflection, at a smooth, slick surface, and at how water runs off it. The manufacturer states three years of protection.

On a finished car you notice it in two ways. Reflections have a harder edge, so in the bonnet you see the outline of a tree rather than a bright patch of it. And your palm travels across the surface without resistance; dust has a harder time holding on to paint like that.

What this coating cannot do

It will not create depth in paint that has none. Over swirl marks the coating simply sits, and you will go on seeing them through it.

It will not stop new swirls either. A brush in an automatic wash, a dry cloth and grit in a sponge will put them there through the coating.

It will not stop stone chips. The front of the car is a job for PPF film; we will apply ceramic over the film as well.

And it has a defined place: the manufacturer did not intend this line for cars in intensive use or in harsh environments.

Who it is not worth it for

A car whose paint is marked and whose owner rules out correction in advance. You will get the slickness but not the depth, and it is slickness over defects that will stay there for another three years.

And a car covering high mileage daily in all weathers. The manufacturer has other lines for that kind of use; which one it would be, we will discuss at your car.

Tell us what you see and what you feel

We want to know the colour of the car, where it is parked, how you wash it, and whether the paint still drags after a decontamination wash. A few photographs of the bonnet in daylight help. From those we can estimate how much work is needed before the coating, and how much of what bothers you the coating will actually solve.

It is settled by paint diagnostics under the lamp. You will see on the paint exactly what we see.
