Ceramic Protection for Fabric Seats

Coffee spilled on a fabric seat does not stay on top. Before you can reach for a cloth it is already in the fibre — and it comes out harder than it went in. Slush off boots on the carpet behaves the same way, so does a soft drink in the back, so does the dust worked into the fabric every time someone gets in. The textile in a car has no continuous layer on top to stop any of it.
Why it gets in so deep
The fibre is absorbent along its whole length. Liquid does not sit on it, it travels down into the padding, where nothing you have at home can reach it. That is why a cleaned seat can be dirty again within a few days, and why the outline of a stain sometimes comes back from below even after a well-executed extraction. What happens under the upholstery while it dries, and what is done about it, is covered in full in The stain came back after cleaning. This article is about the other side of the same thing: whether the fibre can be stopped from soaking up at all.
On light interiors the sun adds to the absorbency. UV radiation breaks down the pigmentation of the fabric and the colour fades unevenly, depending on where it falls during the day. The rear seats then end up a different shade from the rest of the cabin.
What a continuous film on the fibre does
FEYNLAB Textile V3 is a nano-ceramic coating made for textile. Its molecules bond to the fibre and form a thin continuous film on it. The fibre stays a fibre — the fabric does not set into a crust and the feel changes very little — but the surface becomes hydrophobic. Water and coffee stay on top and bead off, so between the spill and the soaking there is suddenly a window in which an absorbent cloth can do the job.
The film is also passivated: dirt clings to it less, so the intervals between hot-water extractions get longer. The manufacturer quotes blocking of over 99 % of UV radiation and a service life of twelve months and more. It is applied in the studio, in several phases, and after application it needs time to cure before anyone sits in the car again.
What the coating cannot do
The coating does not clean. It goes on textile that has been cleaned and dried through beforehand — on a soiled seat the film would seal the dirt underneath, and there it stays. Depending on the state of the interior it is therefore preceded by interior detailing, or by deep interior cleaning where the dirt has soaked into the fibre. That is a separate step, and on a neglected car it takes more work than the protection itself.
It is not a waterproof layer. Liquid left on the fabric for hours or overnight will get through the film. The protection buys you time, not immunity.
It does not belong on every surface in the cabin. This coating is not applied to Alcantara, and leather has its own product. The headliner is held on with adhesive and can delaminate, so we go there only with caution. And textile that already carries a coating does not take a new one until the old one is removed.
It will not repair fading or old stains. The protection preserves the state the textile is in — it does not restore it.
Who it is not worth it for
A car with an all-leather interior that sits in a garage and where nobody eats or drinks. Textile that is already scorched, sun-bleached or permanently stained — there the protection only fixes the present state in place. And a car you are changing in a few weeks: the return comes over months of use, not on one trip.
It is worth it where people get in often and not always clean: family cars, children, a dog, light interiors, cars used for work.
Tell us what car you have, what is made of fabric in it — seats, carpets, or both — and what state it is in. A photograph taken in daylight says more than a description; from it we can tell whether the textile only needs preparing, or whether separate cleaning has to come before the protection.
