Protection for Matte Paint That Keeps It Matte

You have a car in matte or satin paint, and every time protection comes up you hit the same wall: what holds for glossy paint doesn't hold for you. Polishing is out, because polishing takes the matte away. And an ordinary ceramic coating — the one almost anyone would recommend — would turn your matte into a semi-gloss. The usual route, correct the paint and then lay a layer on top, is closed to you from end to end.

The product that leaves matte alone

FEYNLAB Matte Ceramic is the one FEYNLAB line we apply to factory matte and satin paint. The others are built for glossy paint, and on matte they would change the look for good.

The difference isn't how long the layer lasts. It's where the layer reaches. A ceramic made for glossy paint is meant to flow out into a continuous film and level the texture underneath it — that is exactly what makes gloss look deeper. Matte Ceramic covers only the peaks of the microscopic texture and leaves the valleys between them open. The surface goes on scattering light the way it did before we touched it.

Why matte paint looks the way it does, and how to tell a layer that will leave it alone, is covered in Matte paint: how to protect it. This article is about one specific product.

What changes on the car

Water beads and runs off, and dirt has a harder time holding on. On glossy paint that is mostly convenience. On matte it is a safety measure: washing is the only thing you are allowed to do to matte paint, because clay bar and polishing are off the table. The less you have to go over the paint while washing, the smaller the chance of hurting it on the way.

The look doesn't change. Matte Ceramic won't deepen the matte or bring it out — it leaves it as it is on the day of application.

What the preparation looks like

An inspection first. We check whether the matte is factory paint or matte film, and whether there are already glossy spots on it.

Then preparation, and it is chemical only: washing and chemical degreasing. Clay bar and polishing have no place on matte paint; they would take off the very thing you own the car for. Application follows, with time to cure.

At handover we show you at the car how to wash it and with what. On matte paint that isn't a formality: one trip through a brush wash can undo the whole job.

What Matte Ceramic cannot do

Glossy spots that are already on the paint will not go back to matte. The layer preserves them as they are. If the matte was taken off by a clay bar, a brush or a polished-through patch, only a respray or film will help — no coating puts the matting particles back.

Matte Ceramic is no protection against stone chips. That is what PPF film is for, and it is made in a matte finish too.

Who it isn't worth it for

Owners of matte film. Film takes different treatment than paint and we handle it differently — so tell us up front what is on the car.

Anyone who takes the car through a brush wash. The layer will hold; the matte under it won't, and after two seasons you'll have a protected semi-gloss.

And cars that already have several glossy spots. Find out what you're dealing with first: start with paint diagnostics. We can't tell where a glossy spot came from off a photo; on the car we can.

Write to us with the make and model, whether the matte is factory or film, and how the car has been washed so far. Photos in daylight at a sharp angle help, because that is where glossy spots show. All the variants are listed under ceramic surface protection.
