A Matte Look Without Respraying
3 minEstimated reading time — roughly how many minutes it takes to read at a normal screen pace.
You notice a matte car in a car park before you even read the badge on the boot lid. Light does not bounce off it, it just slides across, and suddenly the edges look different. Then you find out what a matte respray costs, that it cannot be undone, and that it gets written into the car's papers. This article is about the other route: matte film turns a glossy paint job into satin, and it can be taken back off.

What matte film does to the paint
FlexiShield BHP MAT is a protective film with a matte top surface. It goes over glossy paint, and the paint underneath stays glossy — the matte look comes from the top of the film, not the paint. The car also gets a physical layer of impact protection along the way, just like with clear PPF film. The manufacturer backs the material for 7 years, we back the installation work for two years, and we do warranty checks.
Why it can be reversed, and a respray can't
Film bonds to the paint; it does not change it. Once you have it removed, the paint is in the state it was on installation day. There is a flip side to that: film does not fix what is already on the paint. It seals in whatever flaws are there. Those need paint correction beforehand, as a separate step with its own price.
Never wax or polish a matte finish
This is the most important paragraph in the whole article. A matte surface is maintained differently from a glossy one, and wax and polishing compounds have no place on it. Polishing smooths the surface out, and on matte that is exactly the problem: the scatter disappears, satin turns into semi-gloss, and there is no getting it back. Waxes and quick-detail sprays that boost shine after wiping do the same damage. Wash by hand with a product that has no polishing agents in it, and deal with a stain right away, not once it has dried. There is a whole article on washing a filmed car: A car with PPF film: how to wash it.
Why some parts stay glossy on a matte car
The matte treatment is done on the body. We leave the headlights in clear film, because they need to let light through, and glossy black trim is usually glossy on purpose, straight from the factory. If it went matte along with the wings, the car would lose its definition and blur into one flat surface. So the result is not matte everywhere, and that is exactly how it should be. If even the glossy parts bother you, there is a different route for that: a design wrap.
Matte film and factory matte paint are not the same thing
If your car has matte paint from the factory, you are solving the opposite problem: the surface is already matte, and the job is not to lose it. That is covered in Matte paint: how to protect it. Here, we are creating the matte finish with a film that can be removed. There is also a difference in what to expect from small marks after washing: manufacturers quote self-healing top coats for their clear lines, and you can find an overview of those in Which PPF films we install.
Why we don't give a price in one number
The price of a matte wrap depends on the size and shape of the car, the number of panels, and whether paint correction is needed first, which is billed separately. We can give you a price range as soon as we know the model and colour. You get a binding quote for your specific car before any work starts.
What happens when you come to us
Bring the car to our shop in Ústí nad Labem. We will look at the condition of the paint, tell you whether correction beforehand makes sense, and how many panels are worth wrapping. The film is installed by Lukáš Vyskočil and Sebastian Vyskočil.
Not sure whether it will look good on your car? Send us the model and paint colour. You can also call +420 739 374 074.
